The First Cave Cup

Beginnings

By Sean Truesdale & Sir Nicholas Foglton

After a pair of initial exhibitions which included an impromptu trip to Devil’s Head, Wisconsin and a more formal tournament held at Green Garden Country Club in Frankfort, IL, (resulting in a 1.5-1.5 draw), the first official playing of The Cave Cup was held at Glenwoodie Golf Club in Glenwood, IL in September 2015. In a sign of things to come for The Cave Cup, a last-minute reshuffling of rosters was completed including a late withdrawal from Paul Marconi who, in launching his local political career, had to cancel to attend a local Republican rally on Saturday.

The black squad, led by captain Matt Taylor, stretched out to an early lead in the morning scrambles matches only to be equaled by his counterpart, red captain Ethan Nash, who won both of his team scramble matches. Nick Foglton and Adam Hall, also paired together for both sessions, and managed victories over stout teams of Matt Taylor and Joe Spesia as well as Mark Krull and Corey Marks. As the sun set on Saturday, the red squad had claimed a 5-3 lead heading into Sunday singles play.

After a long night of cocktailing in The Cave, Black Squad Vice Captain Sean Truesdale managed to pull several Red Squad members off the couch to make the early tee times. Controversy ensued when Jeremy Wallace failed to appear for his tee time. His opponent, Matt Truesdale, chose not to penalize Wallace and allowed the match to begin when Wallace arrived on hole three. Wallace went on to win 2 up.

In a heroic effort, Pete Houlihan defeated A. Hall 4 & 3 despite continually vomiting for the duration of the match, and then promptly left to attend his goddaughter’s baptism. After subsequent points from Corey Marks over Max Malecki and Pat Hall over Ryan Penders, there was a window for the Black Squad – this was only to be squashed by Red victories of Sean Hennessy over Matt Taylor and Ethan Nash over Joe Spesia. An exclamation point was added when on the sixteenth hole, Foglton holed a 30-yard blind bunker shot over Sean Truesdale, pushing the match to dormie and The Cup out of reach for the Black Squad.

As Nash & the Red Squad lifted the makeshift trophy on that late Sunday evening, a tradition was born...
